About

My name is Doug, though in the Society for Creative Anachronism, I am also known as Cinnion map Liuelin map Higuel, which is the name of my persona from Wales in the years following the Battle of Hastings. Since many cannot read the Welsh and pronounce it, while the first part is pronounced “Kenyon”, and some folks have even ended up calling me “Cinnamon” (starting with someone I had known for years, who I will name not, by any of his names).

As you might guess, I love studying history, including that of the Middle Ages, and that of the period from WWI to the end of WWII (especially given family members and teachers who fought in WWII). And while Welsh is on my want-to-learn list (along with Russian, and Japanese), I have been quite fluent with both Spanish and German in the past, though today, that is more accurately “quite rusty, if not corroded”. I also love astronomy, maths and various other physical sciences. I have also studied a bit of psychology, for reasons which will become more apparent in a moment.  Other things I love are reading (SciFi/Fantasy and technical subjects), music (widely varied, from Gregorian Chant and classical, Celtic, Rock, and Electronic/EBM… Some, like post WWII Jazz, most country, rap/hip-hop leave me cold, however). I also enjoy photography, cosplay, cycling and thunderstorms. And for a living, while my ultimate love would have been something in the field of astrophysics or space, I am a computer engineer who started in the 70s as a pre-teen, and am a hyperglot when it comes to computer languages.

One other thing, which took me decades to find out, is that I am high-functioning autistic (aka Aspergers), which I have to thank for my intelligence, but which also came with what seems to be an entire freight train of baggage as well. It has had a major impact on my life at times (sometimes comparable to being hit playing dodgeball, and at other times making the Chicxulub impact seem like a feather).
